Floating floors: often preferred for luxury vinyl

Floating floors refer to the installation technique, not the product itself, and is often used for luxury vinyl (LVF), as well as laminate and engineered wood floors. LVF can be cut into planks to represent hardwood or square tile-sized pieces that all click together like a puzzle. They hover over the subfloor with no nails or glue. Subfloors need only to be clean, dry, and level.

There are some advantages of floating floors. First, because it's so fast and uncomplicated, there are fewer costs for time and labor; some types of installations are time-consuming, laborious and require extensive subfloor restoration.
Second, some floors will move to adapt to humidity and, since floating floors have no real confinement, there's room to stir. While that's not an issue for LVF, it could be for other floorings. Third, it's considered eco-friendly since it doesn't waste wood; some types, such as the tongue and groove, have unusable wood underneath.

Standard vinyl

There are two kinds: sheet and composite, or composition, tiles (VCT). Vinyl sheets can also hover over the subfloor, but since there's no locking mechanism, this is called a loose lay, not a floating floor. (VCT) can be said to be non-glue; that's because they can come with a peel and stick adhesive backing that has no strong odor, and obviously, there's no cleanup.
