If you're like most people outside of the flooring industry, you probably don't spend a lot of time thinking about flooring, unless you are getting ready for a big flooring installation project. Since most people don't think about flooring very much, it stands to reason that most don't know much about flooring and, thus, have questions about it. That's where we come in!
We've seen an uptick of interest in a few different flooring materials, and the questions are coming fast and thick. So, we thought we would provide a quick FAQ about the one people have been asking about most, laminate. Here are the answers to a few questions about laminate flooring installations we hear most often.
Is it waterproof?
One of the biggest misconceptions people have about laminate is that it is waterproof. People tend to mix laminate up with vinyl for some reason, and this often leads to confusion. Laminate is actually a wood product and, though it is more resistant to water than other wood floors, it is still not waterproof.
Which rooms are recommended for laminate?
This question dovetails nicely with the previous, because knowing that laminate isn't waterproof helps you better understand which rooms are apt for this type of floor installation. Basically, this means you shouldn't install laminate in any room where water is a concern; bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements are not recommended. Much like hardwood, kitchens are doable, if care is taken to manage water issues around sinks. This usually just means cleaning up any spilled water ASAP, and laying down some waterproof mats near the sink, nothing too fancy.
Is it easy to maintain?
There isn't really anything extra to consider when it comes to maintaining this type of flooring, when compared to other wood flooring options. You basically just have to make sure to deal with any liquid spills as quickly as you can, sweep regularly to avoid wear, and occasionally run a damp mop or microfiber cloth over the floors to keep them looking great. They're not too different from hardwood or engineered hardwood flooring in this regard.
